Why fans still care

TOM MORELLO made sounds nobody expected from a guitar. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame credits his “novel guitar sonics” with shaping Rage Against the Machine.

He came to the instrument late and caught up fast. Then he spent 35 years using it to make a point, with Rage, Audioslave, Bruce Springsteen, Who’s Who number 17 in · Ultimate Eagles Reunion (story coming soon) and on his own.

In July 2025 he had one of the biggest jobs in rock: musical director for Black Sabbath’s last show.

Early life and training

Morello was born in Harlem on 30 May 1964, the only child of Mary Morello and Ngethe Njoroge, who had met in Nairobi. He took his mother’s surname. She was a schoolteacher, and she raised him in Libertyville, Illinois.

He felt out of place there as a political kid in a conservative town, “totally politically impotent”, as he put it. Music helped.

He started guitar at about 16 or 17, after hearing the Sex Pistols. “Within 48 hours I had formed a band,” he said. That band, Electric Sheep, included Adam Jones, later of Tool.

At Harvard he studied social studies and, a room-mate said, practised unplugged from midnight to 3 am most nights. He graduated in 1986, moved to Los Angeles and worked in the office of US Senator Alan Cranston.

Rage Against the Machine 1991 to 2000

Morello, Zack de la Rocha, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk started Rage in Los Angeles, and their debut album came out in 1992. It went three times platinum in the US, and so did Evil Empire in 1996. They won Grammys for Tire Me and Guerrilla Radio, and split in 2000.

Audioslave 2001 to 2007

In 2001 Morello, Wilk and Commerford started again with Soundgarden’s singer, Chris Cornell. Audioslave made three albums, Audioslave, Out of Exile and Revelations, and their first went three times platinum.

With Springsteen 2008 to 2026

He first played with Bruce Springsteen, Who’s Who number 17 in · Ultimate Eagles Reunion (story coming soon) and the E Street Band in Anaheim in 2008. He played on two tracks of Wrecking Ball, filled in for Steven Van Zandt, Who’s Who number 13 in · Ultimate Gangster Reunion (story coming soon) on the 2013 Australian tour, and was on eight tracks of High Hopes in 2014. In 2026 he was a special guest on Springsteen’s, Who’s Who number 17 in · Ultimate Eagles Reunion (story coming soon) Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour.

Rage again, and Rage done 2007 to 2024

Rage reunited on and off from 2007. They finally toured again in 2022. De la Rocha tore his Achilles tendon at an early show in Chicago and sang the rest of the North American run seated, but the UK and European dates were called off. In January 2024 Wilk said the band wouldn’t play live again.

In 2023 Rage went into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, presented by Ice-T, Who’s Who number 25 in · Ultimate Hip Hop Reunion (story coming soon). Morello was the only member there. “Rage is not here, but you are,” he told the fans.

Solo 2024 to 2026

His solo album Everyone Gets Everything They Want came out on 25 September 2026. His son Roman shares writing credits on five of its 12 songs. On 3 October he curated the Power to the People festival in Columbia, Maryland.

Craft, sound and style

The Rock Hall points to his “novel guitar sonics” as central to Rage’s sound. He built it on hours of practice: by his own account he came to the guitar late and made up for it.

Arm the Homeless and the Telecaster

His main guitar since about 1986 is a Strat style “super strat” he calls Arm the Homeless. It was built in Hollywood in the mid 1980s, he didn’t like it, and he kept rebuilding it until only the body was original. Now it has a graphite neck, EMG pickups and an Ibanez Edge tremolo. Premier Guitar calls the neck a knock-off Kramer from a bargain bin. The locking nut meant he couldn’t drop it to D. For that he has “Sendero Luminoso”, a black 1982 American Telecaster he got by swapping a Marshall head with a roommate, and it’s the guitar on Killing in the Name. The sources describe it differently. Premier Guitar says it’s stock apart from stickers, and Guitar.com says the slogan is carved into the body. Guitar.com says Maynard James Keenan of Tool taught him drop D.

The Marshall and the Peavey

His gear was stolen on Valentine’s Day 1988 with studio time already booked, so he bought what the shop had: a Marshall JCM800 50 watt head and a Peavey 4x12. “The Marshall and the Peavey,” as he puts it. He still uses that pairing, and often covered the cabinet’s grille with a picture of Che Guevara. In the Rage years the pedals were a Cry Baby wah, an original DigiTech Whammy, a Boss delay and a DOD EQ used as a solo boost. In 2019 he played Ernie Ball strings and Dunlop Jazz III picks.

The toggle switch and the Whammy

The breakthrough, he says, was the toggle switch. Flicking it while working the wah made the guitar sound a bit like a keyboard, and he kept the idea in reserve. The Bulls on Parade solo copies a DJ scratching, with Run-DMC and Jam Master Jay, Who’s Who number 19 in · Ultimate Hip Hop Reunion as the models. His “Soul Power” Strat, made as a Fender signature model in 2020, has a kill switch built in for that stutter. Guitar.com lists his Whammy settings song by song: two octaves up on Killing in the Name, Bullet in the Head and Calm Like a Bomb, an octave down on Bulls on Parade, a fifth up on Know Your Enemy.

Hurricane noises

He practised scales for hours a day. Then he saw two cover bands whose guitarists could already shred the way he was trying to, so he switched to practising animal noises, robot sounds and hurricane noises, eight hours a day. His early models were Randy Rhoads, Who’s Who number 28, Eddie Van Halen, Who’s Who number 34, Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai, Who’s Who number 30, and Andy Gill and Allan Holdsworth showed him there was more than shredding. He says the shredder is still in there.

What other players say

“He’s one of the few guitarists that creates a world by himself.”

  2. The poster on the wall.
