Why fans still care

ICE-T helped write the rulebook for West Coast rap, then kept finding new stages. Andscape calls him the “Godfather of West Coast gangsta rap”. He has a Grammy with his metal band, a star on Hollywood Boulevard and one of the longest runs on American television.

Early years

Tracy Marrow was born in Newark, New Jersey, on 16 February 1958, as NBC San Diego reports, and ABC7 puts his 65th birthday the day before his February 2023 Walk of Fame ceremony. He moved to Los Angeles and went to Crenshaw High School, and later served in the US Army. His stage name is a nod to the writer Iceberg Slim, according to Encyclopedia.com.

The breakthrough

“6 in the Mornin’” arrived in 1986, a first-person story record. Its influence spread fast. Dr. Dre, Who’s Who number 1, has credited Ice-T with starting that style out West, as HotNewHipHop reports, and Ice Cube, Who’s Who number 24, has named the song among the story raps behind “Boyz-n-the-Hood”, which he wrote for Eazy-E, Who’s Who number 21, in the late 1980s.

The Afrika Islam years 1987 to 1991

He met the producer Afrika Islam at The Radio, a Los Angeles club, and Islam produced almost every song on his first three albums, as Ice-T told Songfacts. Rhyme Pays, The Iceberg and O.G. Original Gangster went Gold, and Power went Platinum, as the RIAA database and a Rolling Stone feature from 1992 both record. The Iceberg reached No. 42 in the UK, according to the Official Charts Company. “Colors” peaked at No. 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988, as Billboard and Songfacts both list.

“Colors”, written with Islam for Dennis Hopper’s 1988 film, is the one he still closes shows with. “I think that’s the biggest, most powerful record I ever did,” he told Songfacts.

Rap meets metal

He also started Body Count, a metal band, whose first album came out in 1992. Nearly three decades later the band won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance with “Bum-Rush”, from Carnivore, on 14 March 2021, as Blabbermouth reported.

The screen years

In 1991 he played the detective Scotty Appleton in New Jack City, and he sang its theme, “New Jack Hustler (Nino’s Theme)”, which reached No. 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991. In 2000 he joined Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in its second season as Fin Tutuola. NBC Insider says he had just four appearances scheduled, and in 2023 it quoted him summing it up: “Four episodes turned into 24 years.” His UK chart high came in 1996, when “The Lane” reached No. 18, according to the Official Charts Company.

Craft, sound and the studio

Telling it in the first person

He came up with his own angle. Describing how he met Afrika Islam, he told Songfacts: “I had a different swing on hip-hop”.

Ideas as they happen

His writing method is simple. “As events happen I write down ideas,” he told Consequence in 2020.
