the Beastie Boy who made the beat for LL Cool J

He was one of the three Beastie Boys on the first rap album to top the Billboard 200. Along the way he made a beat for LL Cool J, picked up guitar on Check Your Head and, decades later, helped write the band’s own book.

Why fans still care

Beastie Boys songs have passed 3.2 billion Spotify streams, and “Sabotage” alone sat at 559,679,605 on 1 November 2026. AD-ROCK shared the mic with Mike D, Who’s Who number 5, and Adam Yauch, Who’s Who number 8, and he turned 60 on 31 October 2026.

Early years

Adam Horovitz was born on 31 October 1966. In 1985 the Beastie Boys went out supporting Madonna on The Virgin Tour. Mike D later called it “totally absurd” that they were asked.

The band was close to Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons in the early Def Jam days. Ad-Rock remembers hearing a demo from LL Cool J, Who’s Who number 20, at Rubin’s dorm and telling Rubin he should meet him.

Beastie Boys

On 7 March 1987 Licensed to Ill became the first rap album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In 2015 the RIAA certified it Diamond. Paul’s Boutique followed in 1989 and went 2x Platinum.

The live band years 1992 to 1998

For Check Your Head the band picked up their instruments, and Ad-Rock played guitar. SPIN called his playing “quite flavorful” in 1992, though he played it down. “I can’t sing. I like being in a band,” he told the magazine. Ill Communication and Hello Nasty both went 3x Platinum, and Hello Nasty topped the UK albums chart.

Grammys and the Rock Hall 1999 to 2012

Hello Nasty brought two Grammy wins in 1999, one for “Intergalactic” and one for Best Alternative Music Performance. To the 5 Boroughs went Platinum in 2004, and The Mix-Up won Best Pop Instrumental Album in 2008. In 2012 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Chuck D and LL Cool J, and Ad-Rock read a letter from Yauch at the ceremony.

Film, bass and the book 2015 to 2023

By 2015 he was scoring films, including Truth About Lies and No No: A Dockumentary, acting in While We’re Young and playing bass in a band with Bridget Everett. “It’s been fun to just play bass in a band and play live,” he told Loudwire. On 30 October 2018 he and Mike D published Beastie Boys Book. On 9 September 2023 the two of them unveiled Beastie Boys Square, at Rivington and Ludlow Streets on the Lower East Side. “I want to thank everyone that loves Beastie Boys music,” he said.

Craft, sound and the studio

How he works

Ad-Rock made the beat for LL Cool J’s “I Need a Beat” on Def Jam, though the record credits Rick Rubin. For years his only sampler was an E-mu SP-1200 that he believes once belonged to Ice- T, Who’s Who number 25. Around 2010 he moved to software. “Basically, I do all my music in Reason and Pro Tools,” he said.

How the lyrics came together

Looking back in 2018, he told Dazed that “our lyrics were usually meant to just make each other laugh”.

What others say

Stories people still tell

  1. First to the top.

Before Licensed to Ill, no rap album had ever reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

  2. The demo.

By Ad-Rock’s own account, he was the one who told Rick Rubin to meet LL Cool J.

  3. Ice-T’s sampler.

The SP-1200 he used for years is one he believes came from Ice-T.

Legacy

Ad-Rock was part of rap’s first No. 1 album, three Grammy wins and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, and a Lower East Side corner now carries the band’s name. Bandmate Adam Yauch died in 2012.

Put this one on the wall and sooner or later someone in the room starts arguing about the best Beastie Boys album.
