Why fans still care

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame says LL COOL J “created the template for the hip-hop superstar”. He was a battle rapper with swagger and a balladeer at the same time, and the Rock Hall credits him with pioneering the rap ballad. Few artists in any genre have stayed in front of an audience this long.

Early years

James Todd Smith was born on 14 January 1968 in Bay Shore, New York, and grew up in Queens. The A.V. Club describes an early home set up of turntables, a mixer, speakers and a microphone, and says he left high school to chase music.

The breakthrough

His demo tape reached Rick Rubin’s dorm room at NYU because of Rubin’s own record, “It’s Yours”, as CBS’s 60 Minutes and The A.V. Club both tell it. The A.V. Club adds that it got played at the urging of Ad-Rock, Who’s Who number 6, of the Beastie Boys.

“I Need a Beat” came out in 1984 as Def Jam’s first official single, and uDiscover Music and The A.V. Club both say it went on to sell 100,000 copies.

Radio 1985

Radio arrived on 18 November 1985 as Def Jam’s first album, with a back cover credit that read “Reduced by Rick Rubin”. “Rock the Bells”, written by LL Cool J and Rubin, came from these sessions.

Mama Said Knock You Out 1990

Marley Marl produced the album, and the title track won LL Cool J his first Grammy, for Best Rap Solo Performance.

The screen

He played Sam Hanna in NCIS: Los Angeles for 14 seasons, from 2009 to 2023, and took the character to NCIS: New York, which premiered on 6 October 2026.

The FORCE 2024

Every track on The FORCE was produced by Q-Tip. LL Cool J told the Associated Press he had to learn to rap again because the tracks he was getting were better than the songs he was writing. RTTNews reported it debuted at number 9 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart, and in the UK it topped the Official Hip Hop and R&B Albums chart.

Craft, sound and the studio

Boom bap and charm

The Rock Hall describes his early sound as “gritty, ’boom-bap’ rap, aggressive flow, and streetwise braggadocio”. The A.V. Club wrote that he delivered it “with more fierce conviction and charisma than anyone had heard from a rap artist”. uDiscover Music points to his punchlines, storytelling and boasting.

Producers who listened

The A.V. Club names RZA, Easy Mo Bee, DJ Premier and Pete Rock among the producers who learnt from Radio, and uDiscover Music notes that Foxy Brown later remade “Rock the Bells”.

Stories people still tell

  1. The dorm room demo.

Def Jam’s catalogue started with a teenager’s tape that a Beastie Boy insisted on hearing.

  2. The bells.

Songfacts and American Songwriter both say the original seven minute “Rock the Bells” had bells in it, and the album version doesn’t.

Legacy

The Rock Hall lists Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Who’s Who number 2, and James Brown among his influences, and Nas, Jay-Z, the Beastie Boys and Eminem, Who’s Who number 23, among the artists he influenced. Dr. Dre, Who’s Who number 1, inducted him in 2021. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on 21 January 2016, and the Key to Queens from the Queens borough president in 2022. At his induction he simply told the crowd, “Queens, I love you.”
