Why fans still care

DR. DRE’s name sits on some of the most played records in hip hop. On Spotify, “Still D.R.E.” stood at 1,998,801,586 streams on 2 November 2026, with “The Next Episode” past 1.4 billion. He is as famous for the people he brought through as for his own records: Snoop Dogg, Who’s Who number 3, Eminem, Who’s Who number 23, and later Kendrick Lamar.

On 24 October 2026 he was still on stage, guesting at the SoFi Stadium finale of Jay-Z’s JAŸ-Z30 nights with a medley of “The Next Episode”, “California Love”, “Nuthin’ But a ’G’ Thang” and “Still D.R.E.”.

Early life

He was born Andre Young in Compton, California, and started out as a DJ at the Los Angeles club Eve After Dark. He then joined the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, whose single “Surgery” became a local hit.

N.W.A

With N.W.A, alongside Eazy-E, Who’s Who number 21, and Ice Cube, Who’s Who number 24, he helped shape what the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame calls a group that “solidified the disparate elements of gangsta rap into a groundbreaking genre”. N.W.A were inducted in 2016, with Kendrick Lamar doing the honours.

The Chronic 1992

In 1991 he co-founded Death Row Records, which put out his first solo album. The Chronic came out on 15 December 1992, reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and brought in the G-funk sound, built on Parliament-Funkadelic. “Nuthin’ But A ’G’ Thang” was built on a sample of Leon Haywood’s 1975 “I Want’a Do Something Freaky to You” and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Let Me Ride” leans on Parliament’s live “Swing Down Sweet Chariot”.

The album also introduced Snoop Dogg. Dre later told NME what he thought on first hearing him: “This is a diamond in the rough and we need to polish it up.”

Peanut Butter Wolf told SPIN that the producers and engineers he knew used The Chronic “as a litmus test to judge the mixdown” of their own music.

Aftermath and 2001

In 1996 he founded his own label, Aftermath Entertainment, which put out Dr. Dre Presents... The Aftermath, certified Platinum in September 1997. Then came Dr. Dre 2001, certified 6x Platinum on 21 November 2000. “Still D.R.E.”, with Snoop, reached No. 6 in the UK.

Eminem

At the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, inducting Eminem, Dre said Jimmy Iovine had played him Eminem’s demo “over 20 years ago”, and recalled loving it so much he could not stop listening. “Guilty Conscience”, Eminem featuring Dr. Dre, reached No. 5 in the UK. Later, “Crack A Bottle” with Eminem and 50 Cent, Who’s Who number 13, won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

Beats 2014

On 28 May 2014 Apple announced it would buy Beats for about US$3 billion, US$2.6 billion in cash and US$400 million in stock that vests over time.

Compton and the halftime show 2015 to 2024

Compton, his first album in 16 years, became his first UK No. 1 album in August 2015. In 2022 he led the Super Bowl LVI halftime show with Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. The show won three Emmys from five nominations. On 19 March 2024 he received star number 2,775 on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with Snoop Dogg, Eminem and 50 Cent there.

Craft, sound and the studio

How he works

Bassist and co-producer Mike Elizondo told Sound On Sound that “The Real Slim Shady” started with a drumbeat Dre programmed into an Akai MPC3000. “The MPC is Dr Dre’s priority instrument, above anything else,” he said. Elizondo also said the first two Eminem albums were recorded to two-inch analogue tape.

He is known for taking his time. In 2026 he told Forbes, as reported by Complex, “Perfectionist is sometimes just a word I use to buy time.”

Who he worked with

Beyond Snoop and Eminem, his name runs through the Ultimate Hip Hop Reunion: “California Love” with Tupac Shakur, Who’s Who number 14, “Natural Born Killaz” with Ice Cube, and LL Cool J, Who’s Who number 20, on “Zoom”. He also won a Grammy as a producer on Anderson .Paak’s Ventura.

Stories people still tell

  1. The demo.

Jimmy Iovine played him a tape by an unknown rapper from Detroit. Dre told the 2022 Rock Hall crowd he could not stop listening. That rapper was Eminem.

  2. The litmus test.

For years, according to Peanut Butter Wolf, producers checked their mixes against The Chronic.

  3. Not his joke.

The “high-school dropout” line at the 2022 Rock Hall ceremony is often pinned on Dre. It was Eminem’s.

Legacy

N.W.A turned gangsta rap into a genre, in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s words, and The Chronic became the template for G-funk and for how a hip hop record should sound. He has 7 Grammys from 26 nominations, a Rock Hall induction and a Walk of Fame star, and he brought through some of the biggest names in the painting.
