No. 11 Who’s Who Ultimate Hip Hop Reunion

from Kingston to the Rock Hall

Pepa was born in Kingston, Jamaica, grew up in Queens and was selling over the phone at Sears when a co-worker’s record changed her life. A line in that record gave Salt-N-Pepa its name.

Why fans still care

Salt-N-Pepa’s songs have passed a billion Spotify streams, with “Shoop” out in front at 356,688,504 on 25 October 2026. In the UK, “Push It” and “Let’s Talk About Sex” both reached No. 2. Pepa shares the painting with her bandmate Salt, Cheryl James, Who’s Who number 9, so the pair are together again on the wall.

Early years

Sandra Denton was born on 9 November in Kingston, Jamaica, and grew up in Queens, New York. She worked in telephone sales at Sears, alongside Cheryl James and Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor.

Azor made a record called “The Show Stopper” in 1985 with the two women, released under the name Supernature. It reached No. 46 on the R&B chart. A “salt and pepper” line in it gave the group the name it kept.

Hot, Cool & Vicious came out in 1986. “Push It” started as a B-side until a San Francisco DJ’s remix turned it into the hit. It reached No. 19 in the US and No. 2 in the UK, and earned a Grammy nomination in 1989.

Stories people still tell

  1. Named by a lyric.

The group took its name from a “salt and pepper” line in its first record.

  2. The B-side that won.

“Push It” was the flip side until a San Francisco DJ remixed it.

  3. Setting an example.

Pepa told Interview in 1995 that young people looked up to them, “So we have to be an example.”

Legacy

The Rock Hall says Salt-N-Pepa “redefined women’s roles in rap” and calls them “the first major all-female rap group to go both gold and platinum”. It lists Queen Latifah, Who’s Who number 22, among the artists they influenced, along with MC Lyte, Missy Elliott, TLC and Destiny’s Child.

Collectors lean in, argue over faces and pull the names list. Salt and Pepa are both here, with Queen Latifah on the same list.

Put this one on the wall and someone will ask which of the two is Pepa. Now you can tell them.
