Hang this painting and someone will always point at a face and ask, “Who’s that?” Dean Turner’s Ultimate Hip Hop Reunion is a hand-painted original of 27 hip hop greats, painted over six months. This is the story of one of them, Grandmaster Flash. It’s available as a framed canvas print, made from the original, for your favourite place.

the Bronx DJ who turned turntables into an instrument
He grew up in the South Bronx pulling turntables apart, worked out how to loop a break by hand, and led the first rap group into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Polar Music Prize credits him with showing that turntables and mixers are musical instruments.

Why fans still care
Every DJ who loops a break, marks a record or cuts between two copies of the same song is using ideas GRANDMASTER FLASH worked out in the Bronx in the 1970s. On Spotify, the extended version of “The Message” stood at 70,184,412 streams on 27 May 2026, and the group’s lead tracks had passed 156 million between them.
He is still at it. On 22 September 2026 he published a new book, Birth of a Culture, written with Robert “Scoop” Jackson, and spent October talking about it, including an extended interview with CBS News.
Early life
He was born Joseph Saddler on 1 January 1958 in Barbados and raised in the South Bronx. As a kid he took apart the electrical gear at home, turntables included, and later took classes in repairing electrical equipment. The two DJs he names as his inspiration are DJ Kool Herc and Pete DJ Jones.
The Quick Mix Theory
What he built from those pulled-apart turntables was a method. The Quick Mix Theory takes two copies of the same record and a mixer and repeats a short section by hand, back and forth, so the break never ends. Flash calls it “human sampling”.
To make it work he needed to know exactly where the break sat on the vinyl, so he marked his records like a clock face. Grand Wizard Theodore, his early quick-mix student, still calls it the clock theory. He also rigged a “peek-a-boo” cueing system so he could hear the next record before the crowd did, and used a conical stylus because it stays in the groove when the record is pulled back.
He is careful about credit. Flash says the move was first called cutting, and is now called scratching. In his 2026 book he writes that no one person invented hip hop: “There was no one, singular mind or event that did this.”
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
The Furious Five formed in the South Bronx in 1978. The line-up was Melle Mel, Kidd Creole, Rahiem, Cowboy and Scorpio. The MCs rhymed, and Flash ran the decks.

Wheels of Steel 1981
The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel is his own turntable piece and the clearest record of what he did live. He works Chic’s “Good Times” and Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust” into it.
The Message 1982
“The Message” came out on Sugar Hill in 1982, entered the UK chart on 28 August and peaked at No. 8, spending nine weeks there. The album of the same name reached No. 77. It became the group’s landmark and is still its most streamed track. Flash himself does not play on it. Duke Bootee co-wrote it.
White Lines and Greatest Messages 1983 to 1984
“White Lines (Don’t Do It)”, credited in the UK to Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel, entered the chart on 12 November 1983, peaked at No. 7 and stayed 60 weeks. Greatest Messages reached No. 41 on the UK albums chart in 1984, with 16 weeks on the chart. Under his own name he also charted in the UK with “Beat Street Breakdown” and “We Don’t Work For Free” in 1984.
Honours 2007 to 2022
In 2007 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five became the first rap group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Jay-Z giving the induction. The Polar Music Prize followed in 2019, announced on 12 February and presented in Stockholm on 11 June. In December 2021 the Recording Academy named the group for a Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrated on 30 January 2022.
Craft, sound and the studio
How he works
“I am the first DJ to make the turntables an instrument,” he told Berklee. He likes the risk of vinyl, too: “Vinyl is like being on the 100th floor, no net.”
His Polar Music Prize page puts it in his words: “I placed my fingers on the vinyl…I had absolute control of the music.”
Who he learned from and who learned from him
He learned by watching Kool Herc and Pete DJ Jones. Grand Wizard Theodore learned the quick mix from him. DJcity calls his innovations “standard DJing techniques today”.
What others say
“What Les Paul and Chuck Berry did for the electric guitar, Flash did for the turntable.”
“Oh man, that’s like putting tires on a car.”

Stories people still tell
-
Not on the record.
“The Message” is the song everyone links to Grandmaster Flash, and he is not on it. It was the MCs’ moment.
-
Tyres on a car.
Asked what Flash’s cueing changed, Grand Wizard Theodore said, “Oh man, that’s like putting tires on a car.”
-
Cutting, not scratching.
Flash has never claimed the scratch. He called his technique cutting.
Legacy
He led the first rap group into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Polar Music Prize honoured him for proving the turntable and the mixer are instruments. The loop, the marked record and the cue in your headphones all go back to the Bronx, and to a kid who took his parents’ turntables apart to see how they worked.

He stands in the back row in a flat cap between Dr. Dre, Who’s Who number 1, and Snoop Dogg, Who’s Who number 3.
Put this one on the wall and sooner or later someone in the room starts miming a record being pulled back.
