Why fans still care

BUSTA RHYMES has passed 5.5 billion Spotify streams, and “Look at Me Now” went Diamond in 2025. On stage, “Break Ya Neck” is the song he plays most. In August 2026 he released Dillagence II, 19 tracks built on J Dilla beats.

Early life

He was born Trevor George Smith Jr. on 20 May 1972 in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, to Jamaican parents. When he was about 12 the family moved to Uniondale, Long Island. At George Westinghouse high school in Brooklyn, he says, his classmates included The Notorious B.I.G, Who’s Who number 12, and Jay-Z.

Chuck D gave him his stage name, after the American footballer George “Buster” Rhymes.

Leaders of the New School

With Charlie Brown, Dinco D and Cut Monitor Milo he formed Leaders of the New School, and Chuck D helped them sign to Elektra in 1989. They released A Future Without a Past... in 1991 and T.I.M.E. in 1993.

Scenario 1992

“Scenario” was on A Tribe Called Quest’s 1991 album The Low End Theory and came out as a single in March 1992. Q-Tip put Busta last. Busta says Q-Tip wrote his lead-in lines, and he’s proud of what came next: “That record was the record that pioneered features.”

The Coming 1996

His solo debut arrived in March 1996 and reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200. The Coming and its single “Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check”, a No. 8 hit on the Hot 100, both went Platinum. Around then, time in Dallas Austin’s studio helped him land a production deal and a logo for his Flipmode crew.

The Platinum run 1997 to 2001

When Disaster Strikes... came out on 16 September 1997, with “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” on it, and reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200. E.L.E. (No. 12, 1998), Anarchy (No. 4, 2000) and Genesis (No. 7, 2001) all went Platinum, and “Break Ya Neck” from Genesis became his speed-rap showcase.

Aftermath and beyond 2006 to 2023

The Big Bang came out in 2006 on Aftermath, the label run by Dr. Dre, Who’s Who number 1, went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and went Gold. His feature on Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now” reached No. 6 in the US and, in May 2025, Diamond. E.L.E. 2, begun in 2009, finally came out on 30 October 2020. Of those years he told Grammy.com, “I never left the studio, that’s the thing.” On 25 June 2023 BET gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dillagence II 2026

The Dilla partnership came full circle on 25 August 2026 with Dillagence II, 19 tracks from J Dilla beats.

Craft, sound and the studio

How he works

The Ringer traces his booming cadences to the toasters he heard at home, and notes that “the bass in his voice never disappears”. At about 15 he heard double-time deejay delivery at a Lieutenant Stitchie and Papa San clash and set out to master it. “Shabba was the father for me,” he told DancehallMag. For speed, he talks about “the art and the science of breathing patterns” and where the syllables fall. On “Look at Me Now” he stands still to save energy while his hype man Spliff Star does the moving.

In the Coming era he wrote only in the studio, planning ad-libs and cadences before he stepped into the booth, and he let the beat set the cadence.

Who he learned from and who learned from him

Chuck D guided him early, and he credits George Clinton with lessons in showmanship that he still uses. Eminem, Who’s Who number 23, built “Yah Yah” (2020) from the “Woo Hah!!” a cappella. On The Masked Singer in 2020, as the Dragon, he performed the LL Cool J, Who’s Who number 20, song “Mama Said Knock You Out”.

Stories people still tell

  1. Named by Chuck D.

The Public Enemy leader gave him the name Busta Rhymes, after footballer George “Buster” Rhymes.

  2. Last on the record.

Q-Tip put him at the end of “Scenario”, and that’s the verse people remember.

  3. Standing still.

For all the speed, he keeps still on “Look at Me Now” to make the breath last.

Legacy

He has five Platinum albums, a Diamond feature and a BET Lifetime Achievement Award. He told Complex in 2026 that recognition of his influence matters more to him than a Grammy. From Leaders of the New School to Dillagence II, he has spent more than 30 years in the studio.

Collectors lean in, argue over faces and pull the names list. He stands in the back row in braids, beside Mike D, Who’s Who number 5, just behind Snoop Dogg, Who’s Who number 3.

Put this one on the wall and sooner or later someone in the room tries to rap Break Ya Neck at full speed.
