Why fans still care

Beastie Boys songs have passed 3.2 billion Spotify streams, with “Sabotage” alone at 559,679,605 on 1 November 2026. MIKE D traded verses with Ad-Rock, Who’s Who number 6, and Adam Yauch, Who’s Who number 8, and sat behind the drums too. In 2026 he came back with a solo project and took it on tour, with the run scheduled to end in Brussels on 5 November.

Early life

Michael Diamond was born on 20 November 1965 in Manhattan, New York City. He started out in the city’s hardcore punk scene, where his band the Young Aborigines grew into the first version of the Beastie Boys.

Beastie Boys

Licensed to Ill came out on 15 November 1986 and became the first rap album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200. “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)” reached No. 7 on the US Hot 100 and No. 11 in the UK, and “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” made No. 14 in the UK. In 2015 the RIAA certified the album Diamond.

Paul’s Boutique and Check Your Head 1989 to 1992

Paul’s Boutique followed in 1989 and went on to 2x Platinum. Check Your Head grew out of about two and a half years of jamming at the band’s G-Son studio in Atwater Village, Los Angeles, built with engineer Mario Caldato Jr. and Money Mark. It also went 2x Platinum.

In 1992 the band set up its own label and magazine, Grand Royal, with Mike D steering the business side.

Ill Communication and Hello Nasty 1994 to 1998

“Sabotage”, from Ill Communication, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1995 and is now the band’s most streamed track. Hello Nasty brought two Grammy wins in 1999, one for “Intergalactic” and one for Best Alternative Music Performance.

The Mix-Up 2007

The Mix-Up was all instrumental. “There are no vocals, no samples. We played everything,” Mike D said. It won the Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album.

The Rock Hall 2012

Chuck D and LL Cool J, Who’s Who number 20, inducted the Beastie Boys on 14 April 2012. Adam Yauch died in 2012.

Producer and solo artist 2016 to 2026

He hosted The Echo Chamber on Beats 1 in 2016 and produced for the English duo Slaves. Later he co-produced The Hives’ The Hives Forever Forever The Hives with Pelle Gunnerfeldt. In 2020 he and Ad-Rock told the band’s story in Beastie Boys Story on Apple TV+.

On 8 May 2026 he released “Switch Up” as Mike D 5D, which Stereogum called the first new song from any Beastie Boy since 2011. The album Thank You followed on 28 August on Capitol, and the tour opened at Royale in Boston on 30 August.

Craft, sound and the studio

How he works

Drums are his instrument. Writing for SPIN in 1991, Bob Mack rated him as already solid, with the potential of a player like Steve Gadd. His handwritten lyrics for “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” are held by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Talking about Thank You, he told NME, “musically it’s still pretty immature, and lyrically it’s a little bit more mature”. NME called the opener “Switch Up” jungle-driven, controlled chaos.

Who he worked with

Nas, Who’s Who number 7, features on “Too Many Rappers”, which earned the band a Grammy nomination in 2010. Laurie Vincent of Slaves said he became “almost like a third band member” in the studio.

Stories people still tell

  1. First to the top.

Before Licensed to Ill, no rap album had ever reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

  2. The demo.

At the 2012 Rock Hall ceremony, LL Cool J said it was the Beastie Boys who first played Rick Rubin his demo.

  3. All hands.

The Mix-Up had no vocals and no samples. The band played everything themselves, and it won a Grammy.

Legacy

Mike D was part of rap’s first No. 1 album, three Grammy wins and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Decades on, he is producing other bands and releasing his own records. On Yauch, he has said, “I think about him in the form of his life”.
