Vince Neil: a Van Halen car park, a Gatling gun voice and Kickstart My Heart | Highway to Hell

The painting

Hang this painting and someone will always point at a face and ask, “Who’s that?” Dean Turner’s Highway to Hell is a hand-painted original of hard rock and metal musicians from ten bands, painted over 12 months. This is the story of one of them, Vince Neil. It’s available as a framed canvas print, made from the original, for the room where your music lives.

No. 17 Who’s Who Highway to Hell

a Van Halen car park, a Gatling gun voice and Kickstart My Heart

As a teenager, Vince Neil stood in the car park at a Van Halen show selling T-shirts he’d had printed himself. Hearing David Lee Roth sing “really inspired me,” he said.

Why fans still care

VINCE NEIL is the voice on Kickstart My Heart, Dr. Feelgood and Home Sweet Home. Kickstart My Heart has passed a billion plays on Spotify and still closes the show. Nikki Sixx, who wrote most of the songs, says he wrote them for that voice. It is high, raw and instantly his.

Early life

He was born on 8 February 1961 in the Los Angeles area. Outlets differ on the suburb. As a teenager he sold T-shirts he’d had printed himself outside a Van Halen show at the Long Beach Arena. He heard David Lee Roth, and the frontman life was the one he wanted.

Sunset Strip to Dr. Feelgood 1981 to 1991

He joined Mötley Crüe early in 1981. Too Fast for Love came out on Leathur Records on 10 November that year, and it is now Platinum in the US. Shout at the Devil, Theatre of Pain and Girls, Girls, Girls all went 4x Platinum. Then came Dr. Feelgood, made with producer Bob Rock at Little Mountain Sound in Vancouver. It reached number one on the Billboard 200 in October 1989, held it for two weeks, and is now 9x Platinum. It won an American Music Award in 1991.

Exposed and the return 1992 to 1997

He was out of the band in February 1992. Outlets differ on whether he quit or was pushed. John Corabi sang on the 1994 album Mötley Crüe. Neil’s solo album Exposed came out on 27 April 1993 and reached number 13, with You’re Invited (But Your Friend Can’t Come) as its first single. He was back for Generation Swine in 1997.

The farewell and the comeback 2006 to 2026

In January 2006 all four members turned up outside the Musicians Institute for the band’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In January 2014 they announced a final tour, which ended at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 31 December 2015. Before S.O.S. he told the crowd, “This is the last time you’re going to be seeing the four of us together on stage.” The encore was Home Sweet Home. The Dirt, the band’s film, arrived on Netflix in March 2019, with Daniel Webber playing him, and Neil said he was “really pleasantly surprised” by it.

The band came back for the Stadium Tour with Def Leppard, which had sold more than a million tickets before it began. It ran from 16 June to 9 September 2022. A Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live ended on 3 October 2025. On 17 July 2026 the Return of the Carnival of Sins tour opened in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, with Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee and John 5. Neil had wanted Red Hot back in the set, and it opened the show. A residency at Caesars Palace is announced for March and April 2027.

Craft, sound and style

The voice

Sixx has called Neil’s voice “amazing, unique”, putting it alongside Robert Plant and Perry Farrell, singers he describes as raw rather than pitch-perfect. In Classic Rock he went further: “His voice was kind of like a Gatling gun.”

Singing the high parts

In 2016 Neil said he had been lucky with “that higher-register stuff” and that his voice had been bulletproof over the years. He said the band still plays the songs in their original tunings. He called his approach an “old road singer/saloon singer mentality”.

Dr. Feelgood in Vancouver

At Little Mountain Sound the band members recorded their parts separately. Sixx says Bob Rock was “pushing Vince to sing better. Nobody had done that before.” Rock says he was trying to make everything on the record as big and powerful as it could be.

Stories people still tell

  1. The car park at Long Beach.

Before he had a band, he was selling T-shirts outside a Van Halen show. He has named Roth as the spark ever since, so the singer at number 17 in this painting owes something to the band of Eddie Van Halen, Who’s Who number 8.

  2. Red Hot comes back.

For 2026 he asked for Red Hot, a Shout at the Devil track, to return to the set. It ended up opening the show.

  3. A character in a picture book.

In October 2026 he turned up as a character in Heavy Metal Harry’s First Gig, a children’s book by Paul Fessock.

Legacy

Mötley Crüe say they have sold more than 100 million albums. Home Sweet Home has been played at more than 1,300 shows and Shout at the Devil at more than 1,500, according to setlist.fm. Those songs reach a new audience every tour, and Neil is still the one singing them.
