Put this one on the wall and the room starts naming names, and someone will start a quiet Don’t Dream It’s Over. Dean Turner’s Ultimate Aussie Pub Rock Reunion is a hand-painted original of 34 faces from Australian music and TV, and Neil Finn, Who’s Who number 8, is among them, a New Zealander who formed his most famous band in Melbourne. Dean worked on the painting for well over a year and completed it in 2024.
It’s available as a framed canvas print, made from the original, for the room where your music lives. This is Neil Finn’s story.

Why fans still care
NEIL FINN wrote Don’t Dream It’s Over, which has passed 1.29 billion Spotify streams. He also wrote I Got You, Weather With You, Better Be Home Soon and Fall At Your Feet. ARIA calls Recurring Dream the highest-selling Australian album by a group. AudioCulture calls him “a songwriter’s songwriter”, which is about right.
Early life
He was born in Te Awamutu in the Waikato in 1958, the youngest of four. He learned on the family piano, working through Beatles and Carole King songs, then on his own guitar, and often performed with his brother Tim as a kid. He supported Split Enz in 1976 and played in a short-lived Auckland band, After Hours.

Split Enz 1977 to 1984
He flew to London at 18 and bought his first electric guitar when he got there. I Got You, his song, came out with True Colours in January 1980. It went to number 1 in Australia for eight weeks and in New Zealand for five, and the album sat at number 1 in Australia for ten. Tim left in 1984, and Neil told the band within weeks that he’d go too.
Crowded House 1985 to 1996
He formed Crowded House in Melbourne in 1985 with Paul Hester and Nick Seymour, first playing as The Mullanes. Don’t Dream It’s Over reached number 2 in the US and won the first ARIA Award ever handed out. Tim joined for Woodface in 1991, and Weather With You went to number 7 in the UK in 1992, the band’s only UK Top 10 single. Together Alone was recorded at Karekare late that year. In 1996 he ended the band with Recurring Dream and a farewell concert on the Sydney Opera House steps, in front of an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 people.
Solo, family projects and Crowded House again 1998 onwards
Solo, he made Try Whistling This and One Nil, ran the 7 Worlds Collide concerts in Auckland, and built Roundhead Studios there. He toured and made a live album with Paul Kelly, Who’s Who number 20. Crowded House came back in 2007 with Time On Earth. Today’s line-up is Finn, Seymour, Mitchell Froom and his sons Liam and Elroy, and Gravity Stairs made number 3 in 2024. In April 2018 he joined Fleetwood Mac for their tour, alongside Mike Campbell.
Craft, sound and style
The guitars
His tech calls a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop with mini-humbuckers “The Don’t Dream It’s Over guitar”. There’s a dark red 1958/59 Gretsch Duo Jet that Gretsch X-rayed and cloned as a backup, plus Maton EBG 808 acoustics and a custom Maton 12-string.
The amps
In Split Enz days it was a Roland Jazz Chorus 120. Then mainly a Vox AC30, blended with a Fender Princeton or Deluxe Reverb. Pedals on recent tours include an EHX Memory Man Deluxe, a Boss DD-3 and a long-serving Crowther Hotcake.
The writing
He wrote Don’t Dream It’s Over on his brother’s piano. “That one actually fell out literally, without me thinking about it too much,” he said. He names Gershwin’s chords as a big influence.
What others say
“Crowded House make music that instantly sounds classic.”
“I still aspire to write a song half as good as ’Fall At Your Feet’.”
“We jammed with Mike and Neil and the chemistry really worked.”

Legacy
ARIA calls Recurring Dream the highest-selling Australian album by a group, and Crowded House have had ten ARIA top-five albums. Through 7 Worlds Collide and Roundhead Studios he brought international artists to Auckland. In 2026 he toured with the reunited Split Enz and presented the APRA Silver Scroll. A remastered Split Enz best-of is due on 27 November 2026.
