Michael Gudinski: Mushroom Records, Frontier Touring and a lifetime of gut feel | Ultimate Aussie Pub Rock Reunion

The painting
Ultimate Aussie Pub Rock Reunion

Put this one on the wall and the room starts naming names: the singers, the guitarists, and then the bloke who signed half of them. Dean Turner’s Ultimate Aussie Pub Rock Reunion is a hand-painted original of 34 faces from Australian music and TV, and Michael Gudinski is number 2 on its Who’s Who. Dean worked on the painting for well over a year and completed it in 2024.

It’s available as a framed canvas print, made from the original, for the room where your music lives. This is Michael Gudinski’s story.

No. 2 Who’s Who Ultimate Aussie Pub Rock Reunion

Mushroom Records, Frontier Touring and a lifetime of gut feel

Michael Gudinski started Mushroom Records at 20 and said he’d never played music. Odds are a few records in your collection still carry his label.

Why fans still care

Gudinski never stood on a stage in this painting’s sense, but plenty of the people who did owe him a record deal, a tour or a phone call. He started Mushroom at 20, booked Sunbury, put Skyhooks at number 1 for 16 weeks, took Kylie to the top of the UK chart and ran Frontier Touring for four decades. Rolling Stone Australia’s list of Mushroom’s signature releases runs from Sunbury 1973 to Vance Joy’s Riptide.

Early life

He was born in Caulfield, Melbourne, on 22 August 1952. His parents, Nina and Kuba, came to Australia from Russia in 1948, and his dad ran a building company. He went to Mount Scopus and then Melbourne High, and left in his final year to work for promoter Bill Joseph. Looking back on school, he said: “I picked the wrong subjects.”

Sunbury and the first mushroom 1972 to 1974

With Ray Evans he booked and staged the first Sunbury Festival in 1972, and the pair founded Mushroom the same year. The label’s first release was a triple LP of Sunbury 1973. Early records included Chain and Matt Taylor. “We were pretty naive and pretty stupid,” he said later. Then Skyhooks happened. Living in the 70’s came out at the end of October 1974, spent 16 weeks at number 1 and sold a reported 240,000 copies. Ego Is Not a Dirty Word did 11 weeks.

Frontier and the world 1979 to the 1990s

Frontier Touring started in 1979, and its first-year tours included The Police. Split Enz, Painters and Dockers, Kids in the Kitchen, The Choirboys and Hunters & Collectors all came through Mushroom. Kylie Minogue took the label into the UK, and I Should Be So Lucky first topped the UK chart in February 1988. He passed on Cold Chisel, then backed Jimmy Barnes, Who’s Who number 14, solo, and Barnes stayed a mate for life.

The long game 1993 to 2020

He sold Mushroom Records to News Corp in two tranches from 1993, started Liberation in 2000 and moved into film, including executive producing Molly in 2016. He organised Sound Relief in 2009, which raised almost $10 million. Frontier ran Ed Sheeran’s 2018 tour, billed as Australasia’s biggest ever. When the pandemic shut the venues he made Music From The Home Front and The Sound, and launched Reclusive Records.

How he shaped Aussie music

Gut feel

“I’ve always worked on gut feel because I’ve never played music,” he told the ABC in 2019. He picked acts on instinct, not on theory.

Records to tickets

He signed acts, chased radio play, then turned hits into ticket sales through Frontier. He also insisted the bills got paid: “if you can’t pay your bills you are a bum”.

No house sound

Mushroom never had one sound. The same roster carried Archie Roach, Kylie Minogue and Hunters & Collectors, and Paul Kelly, Who’s Who number 20, stayed with him for 31 years.

What others say

“He loved his job and music the way I love mine.”

“tornado of joy”

Ed Sheeran, singerSource: ABC News, 24 Mar 2021

“He was a freak and a wonderful one at that.”

“a sweet man, who made everything fun Down Under”

Stories people still tell

  1. Cold Chisel.

He turned them down, then backed Barnes when he went solo.

  2. Dundas Lane.

Mushroom worked out of 9 Dundas Lane from 1980, and in 2026 announced a move to Little Collins Street.

Legacy

Gudinski died in 2021. ARIA’s Breakthrough Artist award now carries his name. His son Matt now leads Mushroom, and in October 2026 Frontier launched SUPAGLOO for new Australian acts.
