Why fans still care

BROCK LESNAR crossed sports. He was a college wrestling champion, a WWE champion and a UFC heavyweight champion, and he took the UFC title in only his fourth professional MMA fight.

His size and wrestling made his fights events. UFC 100, headlined by his rematch with Frank Mir, drew about 1.6 million pay-per-view buys, a company record at the time, according to FOX Sports.

Early life

Lesnar was born on 12 July 1977, and his hometown is Webster, South Dakota. He wrestled at Bismarck State College, where he won the 1998 NJCAA heavyweight title.

Getting started

At the University of Minnesota he was NCAA runner-up in 1999, losing the final to Stephen Neal, and won the NCAA Division I heavyweight title at 285 lb in 2000. He won two Big Ten titles and finished 106-5 across college. He made his WWE debut on Raw on 18 March 2002, and that August won the WWE title at SummerSlam. WWE calls him the youngest WWE Champion in history at that time. He left WWE in 2004 and played three preseason games for the Minnesota Vikings before being cut that August.

Into MMA 2007 to 2008

His MMA debut came on 2 June 2007 at the Dynamite USA event in the Los Angeles Coliseum, where he beat Min Soo Kim in 69 seconds. In his UFC debut at UFC 81, Frank Mir caught him in a kneebar in the first round, after Lesnar had lost a point for punches to the back of the head. At UFC 87 in Minneapolis he beat Heath Herring on a unanimous decision, 30-26 on all three cards.

Heavyweight champion 2008 to 2010

On 15 November 2008 at UFC 91 he stopped Randy Couture, Who’s Who number 27 in the second round, at 3:07, to win the UFC heavyweight title. A straight right dropped Couture, and hammerfists finished it. At UFC 100 on 11 July 2009 he stopped Mir in the second round of their rematch. In November 2009 he spent about 11 or 12 days in hospital with diverticulitis. He came back at UFC 116 on 3 July 2010, survived a heavy first round against the unbeaten Shane Carwin and submitted him with an arm-triangle choke in the second. On 23 October 2010 at UFC 121, Cain Velasquez stopped him in the first round and took the title.

Dos Santos, Overeem and retirement 2011

A diverticulitis flare-up in May 2011 forced him out of a fight with Junior dos Santos, Who’s Who number 15 at UFC 131, though the two still coached against each other on The Ultimate Fighter season 13. On 30 December 2011 at UFC 141, Alistair Overeem, Who’s Who number 2 stopped him with a body kick at 2:26 of the first round. Lesnar retired in the Octagon, saying he had had a really difficult couple of years with the disease.

WWE return and UFC 200 2012 to 2019

He returned to WWE in 2012 and in April 2014 ended The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak. At UFC 200 in July 2016 he beat Mark Hunt on a decision, but the result was changed to a no contest after he tested positive for clomiphene, and the Nevada commission suspended him for a year and fined him.

Last matches and retirement 2025 to 2026

He beat John Cena at Wrestlepalooza in September 2025 and had three matches with Oba Femi in 2026. After losing to Femi in Hell in a Cell at SummerSlam in Minneapolis on 1 August 2026, he told the crowd, “Here’s the future of WWE.” He confirmed his retirement on The Pat McAfee Show on 4 August 2026.

Style, technique and the corner

How he fights

At 6 ft 3 in and about 265 lb, with an 81-inch reach, he fought as a heavyweight wrestler. He took opponents down, controlled them and punched from the top: against Mir at UFC 100 he controlled the fight for nearly six minutes. His power showed against Couture, and his submission win came from an arm-triangle on Carwin. His weak spot was striking: Carwin hurt him standing, and Velasquez and Overeem stopped him with strikes. In WWE his signature moves were the F-5 and the Kimura Lock.

Teams and gyms

He fought for Team Death Clutch and trained at his own gym in Alexandria, Minnesota. Greg Nelson was named as his trainer in 2009. Before UFC 116, Couture spent five days training at Lesnar’s gym.

Collectors lean in, argue over faces and pull the names list. Lesnar won his title from Randy Couture and lost his last UFC fight to Alistair Overeem, and both are in the painting too.

If you can name every face in this one, there’s a fair chance someone taught you them, maybe a mate who watched the wrestling and the UFC.
